"Genshai" - SUCCESSPATH Word Series

Genshai is an ancient Hindi word meaning "never treat anyone, including yourself, in a way that makes the person feel small". It means interacting in a way that lifts other people up to their highest self. It means reaching out to those who may feel small and giving them a path to discover, develop and deliver their best self. This could mean offering a specific sincere compliment, holding a door for someone or offering a homeless person warm eye contact along with money. Or it could mean taking that homeless person by the hand and offering the first step on the path of discovering the greatness inside.

Strengths Based Goal Setting

STRENGTHS BASED GOAL SETTING from Dale Cobb on Vimeo.

Workshop

Setting up goals...directions and destinations for the year should be a process that interacts with strengths discovery, development, demonstration and delivery. If you are a manager of people, even a parent, goal setting should involve deploying the strengths of others more than correcting a weakness.

Make a list of your key strengths (Bring Your "A-Game"):

Accomplishments - Make a list of your past successes. Try for 100 (For most people this is extremely challenging).

Added Value - Select 10 accomplishments where you have added value to another individual, team, business unit or organization. Identify the specific contribution(s).

Aptitudes - Are you Word Smart? Number Smart? Picture Smart? Mechanically Smart? Music Smart? People Smart? Body Smart? Which aptitudes did you use?

Activities - What are the activities and tasks you love doing and are naturally good at? Which talent/passion activities made the value added accomplishments happen.

Approaches - How do you do the things you do well. Gallup's Strengthsfinder 2.0 Assessment is a great place to find some answers.

Aim - Set a single goal based on your findings in the above exercise.

Janet Attwood - On Passion

Of all your strengths passion may be the most powerful, even the most important.  But it doesn't stand alone. As Janet Attwood says, "If you want to hit a grand slam in your life, it's not enough just to live your passion.  It's your passion, your skill, your talents, the things you studied at, the things people compliment you on, you take the things you've gone to school for.  No moment was wasted."

Many believe passion is the pathway to an easy life.  Janet addresses this also, "Sometimes it's painful. I love to dispel myths about living a passionate life.  Many people thing that just because you live a passionate life you'll have no challenges.  Once I know my passions it's like a smooth road, but it's not so.  There are obstacles, there are challenges, there are moments when you go, 'I don't know whether to go right or left'."

Age As A Strength and Seeing Your "Mold" - Jonathan Sackner-Bernstein

Dr. Sackner-Bernstein challenges several entrenched ideas in this terrific Ted Talk.  He shows us the benefits of age and offers an interesting challenge to Malcolm Gladwell's 10,000 Hour Rule.

And most of all, he challenges us to like Alexander Fleming, find our "mold".

The Science of Personality - Film Short

This film short by Hogan Assessment systems is an interesting quick introduction to personality and assessments.  The focus on the 5 Factor system in the historical section of the film without mentioning the contributions of Carl Jung, Myers & Briggs and DISC creator William Marston was a little incomplete if not self-serving.  And then tying the 5 Factor Model to Nazi Germany??? That probably won't do much to advance their system.  Never-the-less, it's a well-made movie and offers some helpful information.

Delivering Your Strengths Is The Point!

In this video short John Maxwell talks about "Gift Distribution".  I call this "Delivering Your Strengths".  Whatever you call it, the point of your gifts or your strengths is to deliver them.  The weakness of the strengths movement is clearly a preoccupation with "Discovery".  Gifts or strengths must also be developed and then delivered.

...and I would add...in a way that makes a difference.  You must learn to become obsessed with delivering your strengths in a way that maximizes your contribution to the organization, team or business unit.

How do you deliver your strengths?

How do you make a difference?
